Our Last Great Day in Greece

This post contains student writing.

Today was our last day in Santorini and in Greece and it was filled to the brim with activities! We started the day by going to the archeological site of Akrotiri, but not before we waited an hour and a half for the bus there.

Akrotiri was a city in southern Santorini that was destroyed by the volcanic eruption in the 17th century BCE. But we learned there that somehow, everyone in the city evacuated before the eruption, likely due to the earthquakes that preceded it.

After that we grabbed lunch and went on to swim at the red sand beach.

This beach was completely surrounded by red rocks which gives the sand and the area its unique color.

After swimming, we went back to Fira and boarded our sail boat/pirate ship. The boat first took us to one of the islands that re-emerged after the volcanic eruption. We hiked around the island seeing the many craters the volcano caused.

We then boarded the boat and went to swim in a hot spring caused by the gas the volcano gives out. The water also had lots of iron in it which rusted the water and gave everything there an orange tint. There was also very soothing mud that many covered themselves in as an impromptu spa day.

We returned to our boat and drove around for a few hours, watching the sunset, and dancing to music. We then returned to our hotel and collapsed after this amazing and fun filled day.
