Goodbye Crete!

In our third and final day in Crete, the Smithsonian crew decided to tie up any loose ends in the town by the hotel. We traversed shops in small groups, exploring the variety of local businesses and enjoying brunch. Some of us even went into the Sea Fort a few had observed last night on the pier. The fort in question turned out to be the Rocca a Mare Fortress. We learned about marine war tactics by observing the ruins of cannons in the interior and getting a firsthand experience of the heavy winds that could be felt due to how close the fort was to the Aegean Sea.

Once we had returned from brunch, the group headed out to the beach! We enjoyed partaking in a multitude of activities, ranging from a myriad of games in the ocean, to building sand castles, or simply lying down in the sand (with sunscreen, of course!). About halfway into the beach day, the group took a break from swimming to enjoy various snacks before we went right back to enjoying the warm sun. This inevitably led to a fun game of volleyball, where two of the leaders, Kira and Julia, aided some of us by utilizing their expert volleyball skills from eighth grade. Though many of us fell face-first into the sand to get the ball at some point, it was worth it to enjoy sport alongside such friendly individuals (and get bragging rights, obviously). Unfortunately, all great things must come to an end, and we eventually had to bid farewell to the lovely summer sun… at least for now.

The day ended with a wonderful dinner, where the leaders split us into randomly drawn groups ranging from 3 to 4 individuals. We were seated at separate tables, and utilized the chance to get to know people we may not be as familiar with. With the help of ice breakers and delicious food, I for one can say that new friendships were definitely formed. Overall, what was supposed to be a simple day turned out to be anything but with this wonderfully eclectic bunch. Though we savored our time relaxing, by far our best moments were spent with one another singing (aka shouting) to Mamma Mia or embracing the various beach props at our disposal for hilarious photos. I couldn’t be more grateful to know that there is never going to be a boring day on this trip! Next stop: Santorini!
